Man affected by three diseases from a single tick!

One of the most unluckiest meet with the tick might be this one that happened with this man in Oregon says doctors. A 70 year old man fell sick with 3 completely different diseases after getting a tick bite.

The recent case studies shows that the man was rushed to emergency in a hospital for having symptoms like fever, headache, nausea with leg pain and swelling around his ankle. Laboratory tests revealed that thrombocytopenia, anemia along with acute kidney injury and also with possibly liver damage.

The man informed the doctors that he observed some kind of insect bite on the same leg few days back. This thing happened when he went on a trip to Northeastern U.S. The doctors suspected that it might be disease carrying tick bite.

On the suspecting the possible diseases, blood tests were done in the laboratory. The laboratory tests revealed the man is having three different infection. The person was having Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, anaplasmosis and babesiosis caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti bacteria respectively.

It is said that having a tick borne infection along with other infections are common but having three different tick borne infections at a same time was quite surprising.

The symptoms of Lyme disease are quite common like headache, fever and nausea where as other two infections are dangerous. Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis can cause thrombocytopenia, anemia along with organ damage.

All three disease together probably must have worsened the condition of man since one co infection along with Lyme disease is bad to handle.

Luckily, these disease were curable by treating with antibiotics. And after three shots of antibiotics the man’s health eventually started improving.

Although, gettingĀ  3 infections from ticks in very rare but disease caused by ticks are increasing day by day in U.S. Also, the population of ticks are rapidly increasing because of the weather change. It is a thing to be concerned about since recent studies shows that population of ticks are increasing along side the beaches as well.
