Mary was born on January 11, 1971, in New York. She spent her childhood in Georgia. She was born to Cora and Thomas Blige. She has two siblings. When she was five years old, she was molested by a family friend. She dropped out of high school in her junior year to pursue a career in music.
Blige got married to Martin Kendu Issacs on December 7, 2003. Martin was her manager. At the time of their marriage, Martin had two children, Nas and Jordan. In July 2016, Blige filed for a divorce due to differences between them. Their divorce was finalized on June 21, 2018.
Blige had dealt with drug addiction in her teenage years.
